West Farms Square, 10:15 PM

“baby, baby, baby, i wrote a song about you last night/ it had the strangest melody.” this house-ish joint just popped in the playlist of apple music’s r&b radio station. gritless, the singer’s dulcet voice frolicked over a very happy beat. i tried to switch station but not before the singer continued “and it went a little something like/ la la la, you broke my heart in two.”

outside mickie d, a young girl, perhaps no more than seven, pushed her younger brother in a pram. he looked like he had infirm legs. as their mother came out of the restaurant, the young boy jumped out of his stroller and ran. the young girl shrieked and shrieked even though the boy stopped running as soon as he heard her. he simply stood under one of the parking lot’s lights, looking up at the gnats dancing in the shafts of yellow lights.
